Annoying Error Message

Error loading C:\Program Files\Common Files\ParetoLogic\UUS2\UUS.dll
The specified module could not be found.

Suddenly while I was working on my computer, this error message popped up. Apart from disrupting my work, it gave me a fright with the usual sound effect for system errors. Judging from the message itself, this error was related to a program by Paretologic, which I had mistakenly installed (yes, it can happen even to an advance user) by clicking one of those Google Ads link thinking that it was the file I wanted to download. Don't you just hate it when you click a link to download a file and you get directed to a supposedly download page and the first link visible is a Google Ad link that you need to look twice to realize what it is. And you automatically assume that was the file you wanted.

Can't Renew IP address. Limited or No Connectivity

I was at a public library the other day, and they have a wireless service. I expected that it should be a straight forward thing to connect to the service, since there was no encryption enabled. However I was surprised to find that I could not get on the network even though it is a public network. I have no problem connecting to the wireless router at full strength. However I just could not get an IP address for some reason. I checked a few network setting and everything seemed ok and so I couldn't understand why I could not get an IP address from the server. Since I was only there for a short time (took my son for a story reading session) I didn't bother to contact the librarian for help. Nevertheless I was still curious to know why I couldn't get an IP address.

Cannot delete or rename file in Windows XP

One of the annoying issues with Windows XP, if you are a regular user, is not being able to delete or rename a file/folder and getting a message that says :

Sometimes this message is legitimate. There may indeed be another program using that file you were trying to delete or rename, or a file within a folder that you were trying to rename. In such a situation, you just need to find out what program is running at that moment, and either close the file being used within that program or exit that program. Sometimes this is easier said than done. Especially if you are like me who very often have a number of programs running at the same time in the background. The inefficient way to go about it would be to close all the currently open program. This might resolve the problem. But from experience that doesn't always work.

Buy these ink cartridges and we will give you a printer..

No, I have not actually seen an advertisement that says that. But in reality that is exactly the kind of deal that is out there. Recently I bought a Printer, Scanner and Copier All in one printer, the HP F2210. This printer was selling for $24 in Walmart at the time and it comes with 2 ink cartridges, a black and a color ink. I checked the prices for these two cartridges and they cost around $32 together. So how does this economy work? Ink cost more than the printer itself. Does it really cost more to manufacture the ink cartridges than it is to produce that printer? Just judging by the number of parts in the printer and the complexity to put them together, a rational mind would tell us that it is ridiculous.

Chain emails syndrome...

Recently I received an email with the subject "Slow Dance" which was forwarded to me. It was a nice and meaningful poem supposedly written by a terminally ill young girl in New York. At the end of the email was a request to forward it to as many people as possible and that for every name it was sent to, the American Cancer Society will donate 3 cents to her treatment and recovery plan.(I know of no such technology to track emails in such a manner as stated)

When I first read this email, I immediately knew it was a chain letter because it has every sign of being one. I have seen enough chain letters over the years to be able to spot it. Actually it isn't very hard really. Whenever you read something like "Please forward to as many people...." you can be 99.999% sure that it is a chain letter. A simple way for anyone to confirm whether it is a chain letter or not before they forward it on, is just to do a simple Google Search.
