03 - Adding links to your web page

In this tutorial we are going to focus on creating links within your text content in your pages. Basically links are text of one or more words that when clicked on will take you to another page on your website or to another website altogether. If you have come this far to reading articles on this site, you would be familiar with the concepts of links.

Let us get back into the Page Editor and open up our homepage. To create a link is simple. You just need to highlight the word(s) that will bring you to another page when clicked upon. To do this, just click in front of the words you want to put links, and hold and drag the mouse over as many words as you want. Use your own discretion how many words you want. This is how your highlighting will look like:

After highlighting the words, click the Link button within the toolbar in the Page Editor. And you will be presented with another popup window as follows:

A brief explanation of what the fields are:

  • Text to display - this is where you type the text you want to appear on the page which will appear as links.
  • Link to - the different kinds of link you may have. You can create links that point to :
    1. Your pages - any page that you have already created
    2. Your Files - any files you have on your website.
    3. Web address - a URL of another website eg http://www.yahoo.com
    4. Email address - an email address when click will compose an email message in your email client software.

Depending on the type of link you select, the right column will display a different entry form. If you select Your pages, you will see the names of the different pages you have previously created. All you need to do in this case is to select the page you want to link to. Or if you want a new page instead which is yet to be created, just enter the name of the page in the Create new page box and click the Add Page button.

Likewise if you select Your files you will see the list of files on your website that you can link to. If the file is not on your website but on your own computer, you can choose to upload the file by telling Page Creator where the file currently is. And that new file name will appear in the file list.

The web address is quite straight forward. Just enter a valid URL in the box. You can even test that link to make sure that you have entered the correct URL, by clicking Test this link. As for the Email address, you enter a valid email address in the box. For example me@example.com. Page Creator will add in the mailto: prefix in front of your email address.

For our exercise, we will select the Web Address as the type of link. We'll enter www.google.com in the box. And for the Text to display, we will enter google website. This will be how it looks:

Once you have entered the necessary information, click Ok and you will be brought back to Page Editor. In our exercise, you will see the words Google website underlined and in a different color like this:

Likewise you can create more links using the same procedures. To make changes to this link, just click the link within the Page Editor and a pop-up will appear for you.

Next we'll look at adding web page as well as creating new pages.
